Hurricane sandy has caused a major frenzy among New Jersey, New York City residents.
What we are seeing are long lines at almost every gas station as motorists are trying to fill up their fuel tanks as if by tomorrow the nations fuel supply will disappear.
So lets do some basic math here. Majority of these cars were and are non commercial, non taxi, non livery, non limousine, non ambulance type vehicles which were and are waiting in long lines as with idling engines in excess 45minutes to fuel up. Burning a gallon of idle fuel to add 2-3 gallons. Does it make any sense?
It makes no sense what so ever, because burning 10minutes of fuel equates to a 5 mile drive. So for example, if ones car consumes 15mpg, so 5miles are 1/3 of gallon. Divide a gallon into 3's is $1.30. So idling for every ten minute period, one is wasting $1.30. So waiting 45minutes, a motorist is spending $5.85. Average refill between $25-$30.00. So $30 fill up will get yah 7.69gallons (1/2 tank) [7.68gallons-1.5burnt fuel=6.18 gallons--which means that @ $30 really costs you $4.85 per gallon and wasted 45minutes of productive time.
Not to mention, with the HOV restrictions into Manhattan, most New Yorkers will not be traveling anywhere far. Private motorists just driving for basic errands near home only drive 96 miles in a given week. In a weeks time frame an average 6 cylinder will only consume 5.34gallons in week with a tank size which holds over 10 gallons.
So does it make any sense to burn $5.85 of fuel, when in fact in a couple of days, there will be plenty of fuel. Does it make any sense to burn $5.85 fuel, waiting 45minutes, when in fact that is the 1.5 gallon one can use throughout the first week of driving?
Most private vehicles do not even drive in excess of 100 miles in a given day as taxis, livery, limos, or commercial cars to justify waiting in excess of 45minutes at gas stations.
Americans, please do not participate in the silly fuel frenzy without having a REAL need for it.
Lets focus on other things and get over the Hurricane clean up efforts instead of silly fuel frenzy.
